scholarship for students interested in pursuing a career
in Public Safety
and all of its related fields — Law Enforcement,
Police-Fire Dispatch,
Corrections Officer, Firefighting or Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT).
Troy, Mich.– Sixteen top students interested in public safety careers will receive individual $1,000 college grants to encourage their pursuit of law enforcement/public safety careers by the professional public safety officers of the Law Enforcement Education Program (LEEP).
Earning honors in the 2010 LEEP Dream Scholarship program were students from seven states, including: Florida, Maryland, and Michigan.
Michigan scholarship award winners this year included Joshua Champine, Jennifer Clayton, Maria Frosolone, Nicholas Kehoe, Taylor Langer and Joshua Sparks.
Joshua Champine - Sterling Heights
Joshua's teriffic grades took him far at Lutheran High North, however, that's only half the story. He was a Metro Conference scholar in track and soccer, attended National Young Leaders conference and praticipate in many clubs. Joshua also volunteered as a math tutor, soccer camp helper, and vacation bible school co-leader. Joshua is getting started on his goal of a career in criminal justice by working in Green Coat Security while attending Michigan State University.
Jennifer Clayton - Niles
Helping others is a big part of Jennifer's life. An EMT for the past 5 years, she was a voluteer EMT and assistant coach for Special Olympics of Michigan. She has served on the medical staff for Hurricane Katrina refugee re-location in Phoenix. Jennifer was described by a friend as being genuinely concerned for others. She will used her scholarship to continue her EMS studies at Lake Michigan College.
Maria Frosolone - Saint Joseph
Maria has worked as an emergency medical technician and dispather in the past and plans to use her award to better herself and the community. The hard work is already paying off as she has been recently promoted to dispatch supervisor for Berrien county. Her volunteer work includes serving as team captain for Relay for Life and helping to fundraise to purchase a K-9 officer for the local police department. She plans to continue her EMS studies at Lake Michigan College.
Nicholas Kehoe - Macomb
Nicholas jump-started his career goal of becoming a U.S. Marshall while attending Dakota High School.
He was a Macomb County Sheriff Explorer Post member and completed a criminal justice class at Macomb Community College through dual enrollment. He has served the community as a Boy Scout and head of the Little League. Nicholas was also invloced in politics through Junior Statespersons of America.
Taylor Langer - Battle Creek
Taylor's long time dream has been to work in law enforcement. She will follow in her stepfather's footsteps and being a career in public safety with her scholarship. Taylor has already taken the first step by job shadowing for her local law enforcement program. Known for her leadership skills, Taylor has voluteered for organizations like Students Against Drunk Driving and Christmas Packages for Soldiers. She plans to attend Kellogg Community College this fall.
Joshua Sparks - Clio
Joshua has proven his potential by being involved in many leadership positions at Clio High School.
He was Vice President of his leadership class, captain of the baseball and basketball teams, Vice President of DECA and an active member of student council. Joshua plans to attend Mott Community College and pursue a career in law enforcement like his father.
